FALKLAND ISLANDS

The 1982 conflict in the Falkland Islands had very little effect on the resident wildlife but it did have an enormous impact on tourism.

Over 25 years later, flights now transport visitors on a regular basis, and the wildlife tourism that has developed is proving beneficial to the upkeep of the islands and their residents.

There can be few birdwatchers and naturalists who have not dreamt of wandering near vast, noisy colonies of penguins and of obtaining eye-to-eye views of albatrosses!

This holiday will allow you to accomplish those dreams in comfort.

These remote islands, 500km east of Tierra del Fuego in the South Atlantic, do not boast a large bird list (about 50) ,but they do have five species of nesting penguins, and some marvellous sea birds and wildfowl, as well as fabulous mammals.

Southern Elephant Seals loaf and bellow on many of the sandy beaches, and there is always the chance of sighting a pod of Orcas (Killer Whales) cruising past, looking for their next victim.
