Birdwatching on the slopes of Mount Aragats
ARMENIA
10 days to explore a wonderful Country, rich in interesting birds and evocative landscapes: we will explore many different areas, mainly mountainous, but not only, including gentle cultivated hills, countryside, rocky outcrops and beautiful canyons, and we shall visit a few beautiful christian monasteries.
We will go through the slopes of mount Aragats, where we should be able to find Finsch's Wheatear and the gorgeous White-throated Robin, and then, higher up, Radde's and Alpine Accentor, Bluethroat and Horned Lark. We will visit wetlands like the Armash fish ponds, a private area that can be visited thanks to special permits, teeming with birds like White-tailed Lapwing, Paddy field Warbler and Blue-cheecked Bee-eater, but also the immense Lake Sevan, holding the world's largest concentration of Armenian Gull.
We will look for very localized species such as Grey-necked Bunting, Upcher's Warbler and Persian Nuthatch, in the arid hills and gorges of Vedi.
Birds are everywhere in Armenia, and we will be astonished by the numbers of common species like swifts, swallows and martins, and the same is true for species like Lesser Grey and Red-backed Shrike, Ortolan, Corn and Black-headed Bunting.
Accommodation is very good, all the rooms have en suite facilities and the food very fresh and tasty, with a lot of local vegetables, cheese and meat. Road conditions are good.
NOTE: there is the possibility to combine the Georgia tour (see the Georgia tour webpage) with this Armenian expedition, to get the best out of this eastern experience! Tour leader is Nicola Scatassi for both tours. Ask us info about this tours connection!
